Broughton House

Broughton House allows you to enter the world of the well-known Scottish artist E A Hornel, one of the ‘Glasgow Boys’.

The property provides you with a window into the life of this Artist where you can admire his paintings and those of his fellow artists. In addition there are extensive book displays in the library and throughout the house from Burns to local history books. The building extends to a naturally light studio to the rear and extensive gardens.

The NTS decided to carry out an extensive refurbishment works to the building and having had a fire behind the stone mosaic in the library previously, see picture below, in which they had nearly lost the building the NTS decided to employ FLN to advise on the Fire Safety aspects of the building. This was after the successful installation of fire services at Newhailes House.

FLN were involved in the design of the Fire Safety Systems including, automatic fire detection and alarm system, very early smoke detection system and fire suppression systems including water storage and pump systems.

FLN provided this design and advice service which included fire safety analysis, liaising with Fire Authorities, access to other fire experts in this field, liaising with Historic Scotland, production of designs, drawings, specification and assisting in the tender process. On site personnel to assist in technical aspects of the build, witnessing of testing and commissioning, demonstrations of the system to NTS staff and Fire personnel.
